Abacus Sound Sculpture

The Abacus Sound Sculpture is a sculptural representation/translation of Pierre Boulez' serial music composition - Structures 1a for two pianos (1951-2).

The sculpture constitutes a continuous sequence of abacuses, forming a closed circle. On the basis of 1m = 10sec, the circumference corresponds with the amount of time it takes to play Structures 1a in its full length - 205 seconds.

Structures 1a consists of 576 tones (48 x 12-tone series), defined by the four parameters of the individual tone: pitch, duration, dynamic and attack. The parameters are expressed by the colour and form of the sound block.
